Beanman Background

"Have a can of beans at breakfast,
and you won't get beans in
your bottom!!!"

"Beanman" was an energetic audio spoof on the Batman - Superman superhero genre (with a little Popeye thrown in for good measure) created by your humble narrator and his childhood pal Niels Zussblatt and other neighborhood (Syosset, Long Island, New York) kids circa 1970.

According to Niels, the original recording media was a 3 inch reel of Audiosonic magnetic recording tape, which came packaged in a handy cardboard mailer.   The recording was made using a "European manufactured Phillips reel-to-reel tape recorder. The machine was designed to operate at multiple voltages (240 or 120) but was designed for European line frequency (50 Hz), a different sized pulley on the motor was needed to get it to work correctly. The machine was purchased by my Dad in 1968 on a family trip to Denmark."

In recent times, Niels transferred the recording to a standard TDK SA-X audio cassette tape.  From there, it went from Missouri to New Mexico via Snail Mail; then via Radio Shack analog cable from a Sony WM-D6C Walkman Professional onto a Western Digital 20GB hard drive by way of a Creative Labs Ensoniq AudioPCI sound card sitting inside a custom-built Computer Guru 800Mhz Pentium III computer.  Conversion to Real Audio format was accomplished using Syntrillium Corporation's CoolEdit 2000 audio editing product running in the Microsoft Windows 98 environment.  Then up to the web via Earthlink DSL...and straight to your desktop!

What we accomplished in 1970 with a $150 (?) tape recorder now requires a global computer network and approximately $10,000 worth of hardware and software....now that's progress!
